Humanoid Robots in Manufacturing
Which humanoid robots are working in factories in 2026, what they do, and which automakers are running them. The verified picture, not the demos.
Manufacturing is where humanoid robots have their most concrete foothold in 2026, and the deployments are real, though narrow. The clearest examples are in automotive plants, and most of them are Chinese.
UBTECH’s Walker S2 is the standout. It is in mass production and deployed across BYD, Geely, FAW-Volkswagen, and Foxconn, doing quality inspection, fitting trim parts, and moving components between stations. Its trick is autonomous battery swapping, a three-minute self-service swap that lets it keep working across shifts without a human plugging it in.
On the Western side, the pattern is pilots rather than scale. Figure 03 is being tested in BMW production. Apptronik’s Apollo, backed by Google and Mercedes-Benz, is built specifically for warehouse and manufacturing logistics with a 25 kg payload and hot-swappable batteries. Boston Dynamics is aiming the electric Atlas at Hyundai’s plants. Tesla runs Optimus units inside its own factories sorting battery cells, which doubles as a way to gather training data.
The honest read: these robots are good at gross manipulation, moving and placing known objects in structured spaces. Fine assembly and unstructured tasks remain hard. The open questions are uptime, how much is autonomous versus teleoperated, and whether the economics beat existing automation.
